On January 30th reports came from Germany of several Premier League clubs being interested in Davie Selke.
The striker was looking to leave Hertha Berlin after the arrival of Krzysztof Piatek. He didn’t want to sit on the bench, and Hertha were ready to accommodate his desire.
Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Watford and Bournemouth were all presented as keen, but in the end the player joined Werder Bremen.
At the time, the decision was placed on the player and his personal choice, but this week’s edition of SportBild has it differently.
The German magazine states Selke was ‘on his way to Brighton’ before a better offer came in.
Brighton & Hove Albion were offering a straight loan deal, however, Hertha’s sporting manager Michael Preetz was able to get Werder to agree to a loan with a conditional purchase obligation, dependent on what’s achieved over the period of the temporary deal.
And that’s why, according to SportBild, Selke ended up in Berlin and not Brighton.
