Kristoffer Ajer wanted to leave Celtic in the last summer transfer window and he even changed agents to help him get a move away from the Scottish club.
That didn’t happen and the defender is still at Celtic Park, where he continues to be a regular for the Hoops.
Ajer’s current deal runs down in 2022 and during an interview with VG last week, he refused to comment on his contract or the possibility of leaving the Bhoys in the next market.
Norway manager Ståle Solbakken advised the player to leave the Hoops and join a club in the top five leagues in Europe.
“He has to change league now. Well, he has to. He does not have enough challenges in everyday life there. Therefore, I think he has got some habits, which you do not notice until he meets better opposition in international matches or Europe,” Solbakken told VG.
Dagbladet asked former Norway international centre-back Kjetil Wæhler and Rune Bratseth to give their take on the country’s defensive problems after the 3-0 defeat to Turkey.
Wæhler ‘agrees with Solbakken’ that Ajer must leave Celtic and he also detailed why his compatriot must move to a competitive league in order to continue his development.
“I think he would have been challenged more on the defensive side if he went to a league that is better than the Scottish league. He has done very well at Celtic, but has not faced the same challenges defensively as they do in the best leagues,” Wæhler said.
Ajer could consider the opinion of his national team manager and change clubs in the summer, when he will have only a year left on his contract at Celtic.
