Junior Edmilson is happy.
The Belgian footballer, who was born there because his Brazilian father was a professional for Standard Liege, is currently playing for Al-Duhail SC in Qatar.
He’s enjoying the sunshine and the lifestyle since his move from Standard in the last summer transfer window.
With three goals so far and “seventeen or eighteen assists”, he feels he’s contributing to a team which includes former Juventus and Bayern Munich player Medhi Benatia.
But it’s not thought the 24 year old will spend the rest of his career in Qatar, and there’s already been transfer interest from clubs including Brighton & Hove Albion.
Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg, he explained: “Yes, they follow me here too. Several Turkish clubs have asked this winter and Brighton and Porto were interested.”
Edmilson thought the winter market was too soon to leave, and has a clear objective before leaving Al-Duhail.
When quizzed on Besiktas’ efforts to sign him, he explained: “I was happy and honoured that such a club showed interest in me, but the chairman brought me to Al-Duhail – just like Medhi Benatia and Shoya Nakajima – to win the Asian Champions League. That is the biggest goal of this club.”
Brighton interest was reported by Het Belang van Limburg in January, and now it’s been confirmed by the player.
Certainly one to keep an eye on.
