Unlike Ander Herrera, who has announced he will be leaving Manchester United when his contract runs out at the end of the month, Juan Mata’s future was still up in the air.

The Spaniard’s deal was also expiring in the next two weeks, but that appears to have been sorted, as Sport are reporting on Tuesday afternoon the 31-year-old ‘has signed’ an extension.

The Catalan outlet claim Mata has put pen to paper on a three-year contract on Monday afternoon, which would keep him at Old Trafford until 2022.

By that point, the attacking midfielder will be 34 years of age, meaning he is likely to retire if he stays at Manchester United until the end of this new deal.

Mata’s wage isn’t expected to change too much, staying at around €5m/year.

Sport state one of the reasons for the deal being signed is Barcelona dropping their interest in the Spain international’s services, as they’ve decided to rejuvenate their squad rather than adding more experience to it.
