Santiago Muñoz is set to end his loan spell at Newcastle United at the end of this year after the Magpies ‘reported no interest in buying him’.
That’s according to Mexico’s Futbol Total, who say the forward’s ill-fated spell at St James Park will not be getting an extension.
They explain that his club Santos Laguna are waiting for him to return later this year when his loan deal with Newcastle comes to an end.
He’s been with the Magpies since the end of 2021 and has been playing for the Under 23s but has ‘been unable to make a name for himself’ during his time in the Northeast.
Thus, he is due to report back to the Mexican side at the end of 2022 as Newcastle have no interest in buying him on a permanent basis, despite having an option to turn his loan into a full transfer.
The young Mexican’s ambition was to stay in Europe but so far his chances of doing so are ‘slim’ as Newcastle have not contacted Santos about a move.
In fact, Los Laguneros ‘expect’ Muñoz to report to them on November 22nd, when they begin pre-season training.
It will mean a fresh start in his homeland for Muñoz, who still has plenty of time to develop and was already a starter for Santos Laguna in Liga MX earlier in his career with them. He was also a part of the Mexican U-17 national team that finished second in the World Cup in 2019.
That does not assure him a place in the team when he returns, far from it, but his chances of getting one will be higher than they were at Newcastle.
