Luca Caldirola is the kind of player who had a promising start at a big club’s academy, but couldn’t succeed at the top level in the following years.
His past at Inter Milan is one of the reasons why he’s been interviewed by Casa di Marzio this week, recalling all the clubs he’s been at in his career.
And it turns out that when remembering the early years, Caldirola even got an attractive offer from Tottenham Hotspur, although a move didn’t go through.
“I was very young at Inter, I was the captain, I was also part of the U15 and U18 national teams,” he said (via Passione Inter).
“There were many scouts to see us and at that time I had proposals from several English teams, the most important four, and together with them even Tottenham, my favourite. My parents immediately said no, then we also spoke with Inter and they also gave me the first professional contract. I was happy to stay at Inter, it was my second home.”
Asked if there are any regrets, he said: “No, sometimes I talk to my father about it. The only regret is to have left the academy at the wrong time. It was the Inter of Mourinho, of invincible defenders such as Samuel, Lucio, Materazzi, Chivu. Carving out space was difficult, but I have no regrets.”
After years at Inter Milan’s youth ranks, Caldirola had loan spells at Vitesse and Brescia, until signing permanently for Cesena. It turned out that Inter Milan bought him back in 2013, but that was just a move to make some profit, since they immediately sent him to Germany, where he’s signed for Werder Bremen.
Last year, he’s joined Serie B side Benevento as a free agent.
