While it might not have been the biggest of contributions, Ragnar Klavan played some part in Liverpool’s rather successful season last year, making 28 appearances across all competitions.

Quite obviously a backup in Jürgen Klopp’s eyes, the Estonia international wasn’t at the forefront of the German’s plans, and decided to look elsewhere for some game time.

The 32-year-old eventually ended up signing with Cagliari in Serie A for a fee of just over £1m, two years after his arrival from Augsburg in July 2016.

Speaking to the press on Wednesday, Klavan recalled how his exit came about, and why he chose the Italian side in particular.

He said, relayed by Gazzetta dello Sport: “Different clubs from various countries were interested in me, but this was my first choice. We found an agreement in 48 hours. Cagliari is the right place, everyone spoke of it highly, from Alisson to Salah. And Lovren, Croatian and Liverpool teammate, was the relay with Srna.

“He relayed the the project and the goals. I won’t feel any difference between Champions League and fighting against relegation. I’ll use my experience”.

Cagliari finished 15th in Serie A last season, just four points above the relegation zone, meaning Klavan could have a long season ahead of him if last season’s form carries on into this campaign.

During his time at Anfield, the centre-back featured 53 times in two seasons, scoring two goals to help Liverpool out.
