On Monday, Mundo Deportivo stated Clément Lenglet is waiting for Tottenham Hotspur to agree a deal with Barcelona so he can return to the north London club, where he was on loan last season.
Later that day, Sport reported Spurs have a verbal agreement with the defender on a three-year deal. He was set to return to training yesterday but the La Liga side gave him time off until July 18th.
Today’s Mundo Deportivo states the 28-year-old was given time off because he’s ‘close’ to returning to Tottenham.
It’s claimed the Frenchman has ‘practically closed’ the agreement with Spurs on a three-year deal but his high salary at the Camp Nou is ‘delaying’ his transfer.
Lenglet’s contract at Barca lasts until 2026 and the deal proposed by Ange Postecoglou’s side will see him earn less than his current salary. Mundo say he’s waiting for the Catalan club to compensate him to leave the Camp Nou.
In addition to this, Tottenham haven’t yet agreed a deal with the Spanish giants because there’s a difference of €5m between the two parties. Spurs aren’t willing to offer more than €10m while Barca are trying to get €15m for the centre-back.
Both of those figures seem on the high side, and in reality Tottenham will almost certainly be trying for less.
If a deal cannot be agreed between the two clubs this week, Lenglet will travel to the US with Barca for pre-season and will continue waiting for his future to be resolved.
