Friday’s edition of Het Nieuwsblad reports Anderlecht are looking at their goalkeeping options ahead of the summer transfer window, which doesn’t sound like great news for Matz Sels.

The Newcastle United owned stopper has spent the season at Anderlecht and although he struggled to establish himself as number one, he’s been doing reasonably well since and had been eyeing a longer stay with the club.

Het Nieuwsblad say Sels ‘would like to have a conversation’ with the Belgium club’s new owner about a possible deal, but the Belgian newspaper say it’s ‘almost impossible’ for Anderlecht to match his Newcastle wages.

That either means Sels has to take a pay cut, and Newcastle have to present very low transfer demands or accept another loan, or the goalkeeper returns to St James’ Park in the summer.

That would present Newcastle with a difficult situation, with clubs likely to be interested in Sels probably also not keen to match the wage he currently earns.

A return to playing for Rafael Benitez’s side and being first choice seems unlikely at this stage.
