Thomas Delaney is showing why Everton’s attempts to highjack his Werder Bremen transfer were justified, and why the German club resisting a sale was the right thing to do.
During the last summer transfer window FC Copenhagen agreed a deal with Werder Bremen to sell Delaney. A condition was Delaney would continue in Denmark until the winter transfer window, then moving to the Bundesliga.
Everton tried to hijack that by offering £5m to Werder Bremen, which would have seen the German club more than double their money on the transfer.
In a Bundesliga relegation fight, Everton’s money wasn’t so attractive when compared to the impact it was hoped Delaney could bring. Since the move, Delaney has been Werder Bremen’s best player, even scoring a hat-trick at the weekend in a 5-2 away win at Freiburg.
There’s still a danger of relegation, with the Bundesliga so close towards the bottom, but Delaney’s impact in midfield has made the danger smaller. Such was his performance at the weekend, the Everton target was named in Gazzetta dello Sport’s European Team of the Week.
Everton interest is being further justified, and it would be no surprise if Ronald Koeman tries to seal the deal in the summer. The £5m figure would likely have to more than double to prise Delaney away from Werder Bremen.
