Leeds United’s efforts to sign PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo towards the end of the summer window have been well documented after several parties involved in the deal came out and publicly talked about it.
Those efforts look absolutely justified, given the form the player has enjoyed since.
Gakpo has 10 goals and nine assists from 13 games for PSV this term. The forward has extended his impressive run to the national team, managing a goal and an assist from two matches in this month’s international break.
If he were to extend his impressive run with the Eredivisie side in the coming months and excel at the Qatar World Cup, then there could more clubs looking at him in January or next summer.
At the same time, it would make it difficult for Jesse Marsch’s side to make a new attempt to sign the star in the future.
PSV manager Ruud van Nistelrooy insists Gakpo is on the right track, following his good run for both club and country.
“The fact that he is in the starting lineup towards a World Cup and leaving his mark in terms of returns is a step he is making. I enjoy that. If you achieve a good level with the Dutch national team, I know from experience what you take back with you. to your club,” he said, as quoted by Soccernews.
“What exactly that is? It may be more subconscious than conscious, but he now feels that his level is that of a basic player of Orange, with returns. He has been important with a goal and an assist.
“It’s the first time he’s experienced this. At his age, 23, it’s a great moment. Despite all the troubles, he has been working all summer to become a better player. He was imperturbable. It pays off with the level he has now. This is an awareness process for him. It gives a boost and it only gives you more drive to get even better.”
