Sometimes players are asked about interest from clubs who haven’t really been strongly linked with them, and it feels like the footballer, and/or those who represent him, wanted the question asked so the answer would hype up a transfer.
That’s the case with Lyon’s Maxwel Cornet. He certainly hasn’t been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool recently, yet beIN Sports have still asked him about interest from the Anfield club.
The answer looked to be a clear case of transfer flirting with Liverpool: “Of course it’s a great club, it’s flattering. I am under contract in Lyon until 2021 but you never know what is the football so we will see.”
Cornet also spoke about leaving Lyon generally this summer, and again he took to hinting that a transfer is possible: “I did not say that I wanted to leave, but we met with the president in January, I made him understand my wish to prolong but the discussions were not successful.”
The 22 year old attacker has a contract with Lyon until June 2021 and there’s always the chance he’s pressuring the club into offering a bumper new deal.
Jean-Michel Aulas, the French side’s president, may not take too kindly to one of his players speaking in public like this. Whether that leads to a transfer remains to be seen.
