Arnaut Danjuma has revealed how the lure of the Premier League saw him turning down Arne Slot to join Everton on loan in 2023.

El Periodico Mediterráneo cover comments the 28-year-old made to Voetbalzone in the Netherlands, in which he discusses his move to Everton two years ago.

Danjuma spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Everton after previously being close to joining them in the January transfer window. He had completed a medical with the Toffees and done promotional shoots before a last-minute decision to join Tottenham instead.

That short loan move didn’t work out and he headed to Everton in the summer instead, determined to establish himself and get his career back on track.

Instead, he ended up barely featuring under Sean Dyche, with just 20 appearances, 929 minutes played and two goals across the campaign.

Ultimately the move proved to be a waste of time and left Danjuma frustrated as he’d had other options, including joining Feyenoord. They had won the title the previous season and were looking to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad ahead of another title challenge and year in the Champions League.

Danjuma, though, instead headed to Everton, and admits it was the lure of the Premier League which led to that decision.

“It’s no secret that Slot and I have spoken,” he said.

“I went to see him, and we had a one-on-one conversation. And when I left, I spoke to my agent and my family about how I felt about it and told them he can really bring out the best in me.

“I’ll wait until I have all the options, and then I can make a decision. The reason I chose Everton was the Premier League. I wanted to play there one more time.

“If you had asked me two years ago, do you want to return to the Netherlands one day? I would have said no, but Slot made me doubt myself.”
