Julian Börner… where is he?
On May 9th, Sport Witness brought claims from Germany that Julian Börner has signed for Sheffield Wednesday.
The central defender had been playing for Arminia Bielefeld and reached a verbal agreement with them to extend his contract. The current deal was set to end in June, so the renewal would have potentially seen Börner end his career at a club where he’s been very highly thought of.
However, they didn’t get anything down on paper, Sheffield Wednesday made an offer on personal terms, and the footballer decided he couldn’t turn the Championship club down.
That led to much annoyance at Arminia Bielefeld, with the club’s manager and general director speaking out against the situation.
Neue Westfälische, who were the first to reveal the transfer, report on Börner’s goodbye at the weekend. He got ‘more applause than whistles’ from fans. It started off negatively, and then supporters gave ‘loud, long-lasting applause’.
The club’s following are now said to be understand the player ‘cannot resist’ the ‘financially attractive’ option of Sheffield Wednesday, for the last big contract of his career.
Some of the squad are flying to Mallorca this afternoon for a holiday together. It’s unclear if Börner is going.
A Sheffield Wednesday announcement can’t be far away.
