Ever since he left Huddersfield Town in the summer, Laurent Depoitre looks and plays like a new man at Gent.
Scoring eight goals in sixteen games, the Belgian has long eclipsed his tally for the Championship side during his spell at the John Smith’s Stadium, and he knows exactly why.
Other than the fact the Huddersfield team had seemingly already given up under Jan Siewert, who pushed the veteran to one side soon after he arrived, it’s the relationship with the staff behind the scenes that affected him most on the pitch.
Speaking to La Province, he said: “The second season at Huddersfield was more difficult for me and for other teammates. We just couldn’t find ourselves. I had a few options and thought a lot, weighing the pros and the cons of each project.
“By doing that, I realised that what I missed the most while abroad was the to feel the trust of the staff and the fans. I wanted to find pleasure on the pitch again by playing regularly and scoring goals. I wanted to rediscover the sensations from my first stint at Gent. A club close to my family too”.
All in all, it doesn’t sound like Depoitre had that difficult of a choice to make, since he clearly wanted to go back to his former club and jumped at it when it was put in front of him.
While he hasn’t started every game for the Belgian side since his return, he’s played enough to be happy and has contributed by repaying that trust he so sorely missed.
Meanwhile, Huddersfield currently sit 20th in the Championship, picking up 13 points from their first 14 games.
