Gareth Bale didn’t really play a large part in the January transfer window, largely because he’d already made it clear to Real Madrid, and the world via his agent, that he didn’t want to move.

Despite summer efforts from the Madrid club to get the Welshman off the wage bill, they hadn’t been able to fight his desire to stay where he was, so everything was shelved and Bale reintegrated into the team.

Then Tottenham claims appeared, and it was reported Daniel Levy had held a meeting with Florentino Perez about a possible move before the end of the winter market.

A source close to the player rubbished all of this when speaking to Sport Witness, and then media close to Real Madrid did the same. There hadn’t been a meeting, a move wasn’t close, and no offer had arrived from Tottenham.

Sport, closer to Barcelona, have largely ignored that and today use the situation as a chance to poke a stick at Real Madrid and again attack Bale.

As they have it, the footballer ‘boycotted’ a late move to Spurs, showing again that he wouldn’t simply do what Madrid wanted.

Showing what they’re going for, Sport state: ‘The Welshman was the protagonist last week for a series of events that have gone unnoticed, mainly because people are bored of his repeated injuries, absences, spite and extravagances.’

A potential move to Tottenham, even if the chance didn’t really exist, is now likely to be used to further attack the player ahead of the summer window.

Rinse and repeat.
