Sometimes footballers can be refreshingly honest, and that was the case with Paul Onuachu in mid September, when he revealed that Wolves had been keen on him in the summer but went for another target instead.

The 28-year-old forward plays for Genk and he was under consideration at the Premier League club, before Wolves, then under Bruno Lage’s leadership, decided to sign Sasa Kalajdzic from VfB Stuttgart instead.

Onuachu said last month“I have erased it from my memory. I’m not going to deal with it anymore: not now and not in the future. I don’t care anymore. I want to enjoy this team. I am happy here.

“Wolverhampton (Wanderers), but it didn’t materialise. They went for another. He apparently injured himself badly in his first match.

“The English transfer market had closed by then. So, they could only get transfer-free players and ended up with Diego Costa. That’s football, eh.”

Since getting that off his chest, he’s moved into good goalscoring form, finding the back of the net four times in his past three league matches.

Genk have won all of those games and Onuachu has been a major reason for that.

Following the victory over OH Leuven at the weekend, he’s receiving widespread praise for his goals, and for firing his side to the top of the Belgian league table.

Wolves were forced to look for a free agent after the injury to Kalajdzic, and secured the signing of Diego Costa.
