Liverpool are one of a number of Premier League clubs said to be interested in signing Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo.
The Reds aren’t one of the sides who have been linked the most, with Chelsea getting the headline this time, but claims from Catalan newspaper Sport present the Reds as being serious about signing the central defender.
With a contract lasting until June 2023, Araujo has been in renewal talks with his current club. They don’t want him to get to the situation where he has a year left on his contract, because at that point a sale will have to be seriously considered.
Barcelona have seen with Ousmane Dembele what can happen when a player drags out renewal talks, and they won’t want to be in a similar situation again.
The 22-year-old Uruguayan has been a regular since Ronald Koeman brought him into the side, and that status has continued under Xavi Hernandez.
A renewal offer has been made, but it’s far below what many of his teammates earn, and the level of wages new signings have been brought in at. Araujo wants recognition that he’s a regular first team player.
Sport report the defender ‘has been approached’ by Liverpool, as well as others, giving Barcelona some reason for worry.
Should Jurgen Klopp’s side be able to get the player for a reasonable price in the summer, should he not renew, then it would certainly be a smart signing.
