Lucas Digne was one of the key players as Aston Villa qualified for the Champions League for the first time in more than four decades last season.
The France international left Everton for Aston Villa in January 2022 and Unai Emery took charge at Villa Park later that year.
Foot Mercato have published an interview with the left-back, where he explained his reasons for joining Aston Villa. Digne said the Premier League club have achieved what they intended to when they pitched him into a move.
The Villans lost to Champions League finalist Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals. The defender claims his side were disappointed but can still be proud of their run in Europe this season.
“When I chose to join Villa, I saw a great project. I came here to help a great historic club get back to the top of English football and back into Europe. My dream was to bring the fans back to the great European nights at Villa Park and we’ve done that,” he said.
Unai Emery has regularly utilised the fullback, who has played 3,345 minutes from 45 games this season. The former Barcelona man has less than 14 months left on his contract.
Foot Mercato state Digne is reaching a ‘turning point’ in his career and there are several options possible. This includes seeing out his contract, signing an extension or Aston Villa selling him in the summer window.
At this moment in time, the fullback isn’t aware what will happen with his future in the upcoming window.
“I’m happy at Aston Villa, but I’ve only got one year left on my contract, so I don’t know what’s going to happen in my next chapter,” Digne explained.
“I don’t think about it, because I only have one objective: I just want to finish the season well, enjoy my football, always work hard and give my best so that my team continues to be successful.”
