Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has revealed it was always his intention to end up in the Premier League, but the ‘appreciation’ from Turf Moor was what lured him there.

Weghorst arrived at Burnley towards the end of the January transfer window as they sought out a replacement for Chris Wood.

The latter joined Newcastle United midway through the winter window, leaving the Clarets with a big hole and goalscoring burden to fill in their side.

They are hoping to have done that with Weghorst, who managed 70 goals and 22 assists in 144 games for Wolfsburg and 45 goals and 13 assists in 86 games for AZ Alkmaar before that.

Indeed, the Dutchman has averaged at least 15 goals a season for the last few years; a record Burnley will be desperately hoping he can maintain moving forwards.

Those numbers have seen him linked with a move to the Premier League on several occasions in the past without a move ever coming to fruition, and he admits it is now a dream come true to have secured the transfer he’s long wanted.

“I get a lot of appreciation from Burnley and got a good feeling with the people, the owner and the coach, who really want me and have done everything for me,” he told NPO Radio 1.

“Of course, it’s a risk, and you are aware of the place in the league table at the moment.

“It will be an absolute challenge to make sure we stay in the Premier League.

“I always had a certain plan, a certain route, in my head, and that was to go to the Premier League after Germany. That was my plan, my dream.”
