German magazine Kicker have a feature on Paul Pogba this week and ponder whether he’s worth the €100m+ Manchester United paid for him last summer.
As part of the feature they spoke to Paul Scholes, who backs Pogba to succeed at Manchester United in the long term. Scholes told Kicker he’s sure Pogba “will be outstanding”, and that it’s clear he’s a much better player now than during his first spell with the club.
Scholes explained that he currently rates the player between 7 and 8 out of ten, and added: “I like the way he pulls the strings with long and accurate passes. But he can also calm down and control the game. Either way he has a great influence on United’s game as a six or even an offensive player.”
The Manchester United legend doesn’t accept Pogba is distracted by off the pitch interests, but he feels the player needs to score more often so he can use his celebrations: “That he is so much in social media does not distract him. I know Paul as a very focussed professional, but with a problem: He has so many different celebrations, but rarely gets the chance to use it. He still has to change that.”
Scholes has stuck to his guns over Pogba’s price, still believing it to be crazy.
In July Scholes told Sport Witness that for £89m a club should expect 50 goals a season, and he told Kicker: “These prices are crazy. I don’t know what Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi would cost. Paul certainly has great potential, but this season has had some ups and downs.”
