Houssem Aouar started for Lyon in their 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-final and the tie on Wednesday was his last match for the French club, according to L’Equipe.
Manchester City and Juventus have been regularly linked and ‘remain on their toes’ for the midfielder, but ‘so far the only offer has come from Arsenal’.
Mikel Arteta appreciates the Frenchman’s profile and Arsenal technical director Edu is aware of it.
It’s claimed Edu has contacted Lyon sporting director Juninho for Aouar and the Gunners offered Mattéo Guendouzi plus money to sign the 23-year-old. The north London club’s proposal ‘went unanswered’.
After the defeat to Bayern, Juninho confirmed Aouar is set to leave Lyon this summer. L’Equipe also state the player wants a move elsewhere and the French club will fulfil his wish because they ‘need money’.
Lyon could not hope for more than €40m before lockdown was lifted, but his impressive performance against the European elites (Juventus, City and Bayern) has raised his valuation.
It’s ‘closer to €60m today’, and his price will set based on the demand he has in the market.
With Arsenal’s proposal of player plus cash left unanswered, Arteta’s side need to be ‘much more generous’, if they are to acquire Aouar’s services.
