Mateo Joseph has made it clear that he can’t support any other English club apart from Leeds United.
The 20-year-old is the nephew of former Liverpool star Emile Heskey and is currently with the Spain U21 camp for this month’s international break.
Thursday’s edition of AS has published an interview with the Leeds player and asked about his relationship with his uncle.
He said: “Sometimes we exchange messages, and I know he follows me because he is a commentator.”
The striker expressed his love for the Whites when asked if his uncle forces him to support Liverpool.
“In England they only go with one team, and I only go with Leeds. Being with one team and then going to Liverpool, for example, doesn’t work,” Joseph explained.
It’s to be noted that AS have only asked Joseph about supporting Liverpool and not about the possibility of moving to Anfield.
The frontman arrived at Leeds from Espanyol in January 2022, when Victor Orta was the sporting director at Elland Road. Orta left the English club in May 2023 and took the same role at Sevilla later that summer.
Sevilla finished 14th in the table last season. Orta was partly blamed for their struggles on the pitch, and he continues to be criticised. The Leeds United player was asked to put up a defence of his compatriot, and backed him to succeed at Sevilla.
“Looking at it from the outside, I would say let him work. He arrived last year and has made good signings like Peque and Lukebakio. In football there’s a short memory, but you have to be patient, he has done a great job where he has been, and I think he will return Sevilla to the place they deserve,” he said about Orta.
Joseph has been a regular for Daniel Farke’s side this season, managing a goal and three assists from nine Championship appearances.
