PSV Eindhoven’s move for Manchester United’s Tyrell Malacia has been questioned, even if they did need an addition in the position.
Analyst Kees Kwakman and Kenneth Perez, via Soccer News and Voetbal Primeur, question the move from the Dutch club today while analysing their January business.
Malacia is expected to complete a move to PSV before the Dutch deadline this evening, with reports yesterday indicating a loan deal until the end of the season was close to being completed.
The 25-year-old is not currently in Ruben Amorim’s plans, particularly following the arrival of Patrick Dorgu, but needs regular playing time to aid his return from a long-term injury.
The Dutchman is still recovering from a knee injury suffered in July 2023 that ruled him out until November last year and saw him spend 500 days on the treatment table, as well as missing 70 Manchester United games.
It was a significant lay off for the defender, who now needs regular playing time to get back to full fitness and, hopefully, get his career back on track.
PSV are seemingly willing to offer that but both Kwakman and Perez question the logic behind the move today.
“In the end, this is the best for him. Just play. Back to the Netherlands. And for PSV, a really good choice if he can get back to his level,” said Kwakman.
“He adapted quite quickly, but an injury like that… A whole year out. He still got some minutes now and then. But he should just play football for six months and see what the summer brings.
“How fit is Malacia? That’s the question. Can he play Saturday and Wednesday in a row? Sergiño Dest could also play right back. They just need someone there. You can’t continue there with Mauro (Junior) alone.”
“You get another player like Karsdorp who hasn’t played much. We’ve seen what state he’s in,” Perez stated on Voetbalpraat on ESPN.
“You have to have a backup for Mauro Junior. However, with players who have not played for a long time, it still takes a while to get into match rhythm.”
