Santiago Giménez’s decision to turn down Nottingham Forest this summer was an understandable one, despite the ongoing debate about it.
That’s according to iconic striker Roy Makaay, via ESPN, who has backed the Feyenoord man following the summer transfer window drama.
Nottingham Forest chased Giménez for much of the window, determined to add a new striker to their squad before it closed.
They appeared to be edging closer to convincing Feyenoord to sell but saw their hopes dashed by Giménez, who turned down the move according to reports in the Netherlands.
It was later explained that he has set his sights higher than Nottingham Forest and is seemingly hoping a bigger club move for him if he continues to impress in the Netherlands.
He’s not managed to shine at the beginning of this season, though, leading some to question why he turned down the move and even debate whether Feyenoord will be cursing that he did given the money they stood to make from a sale.
Makaay isn’t going to add his voice to that discourse, though, and instead believes Giménez was right to choose as he did.
“I think it is very difficult to give an opinion because I have not seen any interview on television about the reasons why he said no, we have to wait,” he said.
“You are not bad in Holland either because you are in a team that plays for the championship, that plays in the Champions League, although I think that last year their coach thought a little differently.
“But Feyenoord is a great team to be in, of course they have the ambition to take the next step, and he had the possibility of going to England to Nottingham, he said no, maybe in the summer he has another team where he can go to England or Spain, let’s see what is going to happen.”
