Since the sacking of Antonio Conte at Tottenham Hotspur and Graham Potter at Chelsea, we’ve seen Sporting manager Ruben Amorim getting linked to both jobs.
Even though the Lions aren’t the club with the biggest investments in Portugal, he’s been doing a great work keeping them fighting for titles, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed by the Premier League clubs, as we always see some stories as soon as English sides end up without a manager in charge.
Now as Amorim held on Tuesday a press conference (via A Bola), he obviously got quizzed about his future. The question was mostly about Chelsea, but with Tottenham also linked, his answer could pretty much work for Spurs as well.
“I really like being here, I’ve seen many coaches move to other championships and they weren’t happier. This is an important factor. I’m not looking for anything, I value what I have and not what is said,” said Ruben Amorim.
“I’ve had contact with other clubs, Sporting knows, but I want to stay. If I have to leave, either because I’ve been pushed by white handkerchiefs or because I’ve gone to another club, it will happen naturally. I won’t be the one to open the door, Sporting deserves respect.
“If I have to go, I will. If I want to go, I tell the president, Hugo Viana, and I will, but I already said: I want to fulfill the contract, I have very clear objectives for what I want to do. Anyone who wants me will have to pay the clause because that’s my way of doing things.”
Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting in March 2020, following an impressive job at Braga. Since he joined the Lions, they had 103 wins in 151 matches.
His biggest achievement so far was the Portuguese League in the 2020/21 season, but with them alive in the Europa League after knocking out Arsenal in the round-of-16, there’s room to dream of more.
That would undoubtedly boost a potential chase from Chelsea and Tottenham.
