You might remember that over the summer, AS Roma were interested in signing Granit Xhaka from Arsenal.
Long, drawn out discussions took place between the two clubs, with the Gunners setting an asking price and refusing to budge from it while the Italians never seemed intent on meeting it.
The player himself was keen on the move, excited at the prospect of playing under José Mourinho, but Edu Gaspar finally won the battle, getting the midfielder to sign a new contract.
Since then, however, a red card and a ligament injury have kept the player from getting any regular time on the pitch at the Emirates, which could open the door for Roma to return.
That’s what Corriere dello Sport hint at on Thursday, who claim it’s ‘not impossible’ for them to ‘reopen a channel’ with Arsenal regarding a transfer for Xhaka.
Indeed, without him on the pitch, Mikel Arteta’s side have put in some great performances and shot up the table, and his position at the Emirates ‘must be carefully examined’.
Something to think about as we near the January transfer window, especially if Roma end up missing out on Denis Zakaria, who appears to be one of the favourites for the role in Rome.
