RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has admitted his spell at Chelsea was ‘not the very best time’ and he had imagined it going better for him.
Werner arrived at Chelsea in a €53m deal from Leipzig in July 2020, with the Blues spending big to bolster their forward line.
He arrived at Stamford Bridge with a huge reputation following his time with Leipzig, where he had managed 95 goals in 159 games for the club after arriving from Stuttgart in 2016.
There was hope he could replicate that kind of form for the Blues but that did not prove to be the case, with him managing just 23 goals and 21 assists in 89 games for the club.
He was eventually sold back to Leipzig in a €20m deal this summer, bringing an end to his two years in London, which most would label and disappointing if they were putting it politely.
Werner has spoken about his return on several occasions, but now admits his time at Chelsea was not what he anticipated it would be.
“Personally, it wasn’t the very best time,” he told the DFB website.
“I had imagined something more. I learned a lot, won the Champions League and other trophies.
“I enjoyed the two years abroad very much – and enjoyed London very much. I had one laughing eye and one crying eye.
“In Leipzig, not everything went so smoothly in the first few weeks, but the football under the new coach suits me very well and prepares me for what is required in the national team.”
