Alexander Tettey started the new year by entering into final six months of his contract at Norwich City.
The former Norway international, who has made 23 league appearances this season, committed his future to the Canaries by signing a one-year extension in February. His current deal is until 2021.
Last month, the 33-year-old told VG in Norway that his wife wanted to return home. However, he defied his partner’s wish and signed a new deal with Daniel Farke’s side.
Another Norwegian outlet Dagbladet also interviewed the midfielder, where he suggested his plan is to hang up his boots in 2021.
“How well the body can withstand that contract, I don’t know. But by 2021, it’s over,” Tettey said.
This also means the possibility of joining a Norwegian team has been ruled out.
Tettey will be 35 when his current deal with the English club expires and the Norwich man stressed his physical condition wouldn’t allow him to play for a club in his homeland beyond next season.
“Then I’m too old. My body can’t stand it. As it is now, I can’t train on artificial turf, one knee must be looked after extremely well and it also requires a lot to be old and play with it. It wouldn’t be good,” the player explains.
“It’s a health decision I’ve made, and it’s fine. I have played in Norway for many years before going abroad, so it doesn’t feel bitter. But I plan to go home to Norway with my family when I finish the contract.”
