Despite having tried and tried and tried again to sign Diego Carlos in January, Newcastle United never quite put enough money on the table to convince Sevilla.
Their director of football, Monchi, made it clear bids were made, with the Brazilian defender a bit distracted by everything that was going on around him, but the La Liga side stood firm, pointing to the player’s release clause for a transfer to take place.
That was never triggered, with Newcastle then moving onto Dan Burn to bolster Eddie Howe’s defence, but that doesn’t mean they are going to give up on Carlos.
This comes from Marca, who explain the problems Sevilla face, as more and more rich clubs come knocking for their players, including the Magpies.
They state Newcastle ‘came to offer close to €50m for Diego Carlos during the winter market, but Monchi endured the offer to try and compete with Real Madrid in the league’.
While that’s all well and good, Sevilla ‘are aware that the nouveau rich of world football will return to the fray in the summer’ for the player, at which point it can be somewhat expected that the aforementioned release clause will be met with ease.
That’s because if Newcastle stay up and avoid relegation to the Championship, the wallet at St James’ Park will well and truly be opened.
