Takvim report Newcastle United officials are set to travel to Istanbul this week to discuss signing Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel.
Skrtel has been linked with Newcastle United in recent weeks after claims he could be reunited with his former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.
The 33 year old is expected to leave the Turkish club this summer and he was previously linked with a move to Rangers, before his agent made it clear the Scottish club wouldn’t be a desired destination.
According to Takvim, Newcastle United manager Benitez is very keen on signing the Slovakian and the Premier League side will hold talks with the Fenerbahce board.
It’s claimed Fenerbahce are looking to sell Skrtel in this transfer window because of his salary, The Slovakia international currently earns €4m a season after tax, and subsequently the Yellow Canaries want to offload him in order to free up their wage budget.
Skrtel joined Fenerbahce two seasons ago from Liverpool and has featured 79 times for the club. The player still has a year left on his current contract.
Newcastle are popping up in transfer rumours all around Turkey at the moment, which could mean there’s an agent working to build deals in the country.
