Matz Sels is in career limbo at the moment.
He’s well aware Rafael Benitez doesn’t particularly want him at the club and he’s not on the verge of a move to anywhere else.
Spending last season on loan at Anderlecht, Sels was made to fight for his place and did that well. Becoming an important player for the Belgian club, Sels will have expected to be there again next season after a permanent transfer.
The goalkeeper agreed personal terms, including a big wage cut, but Anderlecht pulled out thinking the fee Newcastle United wanted, plus the wages, plus agent commissions was too much.
Then Sels was left out of Belgium’s World Cup squad, in a further blow to the player.
Gazet van Antwerpen report he really needs to find himself a new club quickly.
The Anderlecht track has been ‘abandoned’, there’s considered no future at Newcastle under Benitez, and it’s reported that Sels could take a step down and play in the Championship to try and prove himself in England.
