Rafael Benitez could do with some support during the current transfer window.
He’s getting that in bucket loads from Newcastle United’s supporters, but bucket loads of cash for signings from the club’s board would surely be welcome too.
With the club clearly having budgets in place, several cheaper signings are being looked at. Tuesday’s edition of Spanish newspaper Sport backs up claims, which started in England, that the club are interested in Fabian Schar.
The 26 year old Swiss international defender currently plays for Deportivo La Coruna, who will be in the Spanish second division next season.
It’s stated Newcastle ‘plan to activate’ Schar’s release clause and sign the player.
Local newspaper La Voz de Galicia suggest the clause is ‘around €4m’ and after covering claims from England of the potential move, it’s stated recent comments from Schar suggest he might stay at Depor despite the relegation.
The defender is quoted as saying: “I am happy in Coruna and at Depor, I have three more years of contract, and could continue at Depor, why not.”
It would be down to Newcastle United to persuade him.
