Since their takeover, Newcastle United have consistently been told by the European media that multiple players don’t want to join them. For some that claim has undoubtedly been true, for others, such as Sven Botman, it clearly hasn’t.
The Magpies are again being linked with a transfer swoop, and at the same time questioned as an attractive destination.
Catalan newspaper Sport report the Premier League club are interested in Memphis Depay, who Barcelona are determined to sell this summer. It’s explained that despite the Dutchman being versatile and currently in good form, Barca’s additions in the current window mean there’ll be little room for him next season.
Depay has been given the ‘letter of freedom’ say Sport, which means he’s allowed to actively try and find himself a new club. Barcelona want €20m, and the 28-year-old feels that’s a little excessive.
Nevertheless, it’s said Newcastle ‘would pay that amount’.
According to the report, Depay is prioritising a good sporting project. It’s claimed he’s already turned down Tottenham, so would be likely to do the same with Newcastle.
If it’s correct he’s turned down Spurs then it’s got to be unclear what he’s looking for. Should the weeks go on and no huge clubs come forward, then Depay will have to assess his options again, especially with the World Cup on the horizon, and this is when the Magpies would likely have a better chance.
