For quite some time, Benfica have sent out messages to the Portuguese media about how much they think they can make from Darwin Nunez’s eventual sale.
Some of the claims, such as the Lisbon club hoping for more than €100m, have seemed on the high side, but the player’s goalscoring form this season has helped confidence grow.
Tuesday’s edition of Record has an article on the ‘inflation’ in the player’s value, and Newcastle United get a mention. The Magpies were repeatedly linked with a move during the January transfer window, and Record report that Newcastle and West Ham offered around €50m.
Benfica wanted €60m for a winter sale, so rejected the offers and now feel they did the right thing, both financially and for their efforts on the football pitch.
Darwin Nunez is 22-years-of-age and has scored 25 goals for his club this season, averaging one per match in the league.
Such form is raising hopes, and whilst Benfica are yet to decide their new valuation, for a player said to have a €150m release clause, Record make it clear that Newcastle and others will required to offer more than what was presented in January.
