Newcastle United have made Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen a possible target in the January transfer window as they look to bolster a defence left short by injuries.
That’s according to Sport, who say it would take a considerable effort from the Magpies to convince Barcelona or manager Xavi into a sale.
The newspaper explains that Christensen is one of the Barcelona players in the current squad ‘with the most market’ as his time in the Premier League, plus his strong performances in Spain, have made English clubs consider him once again.
Several were interested in the summer and Newcastle were seemingly one of them as Sport say they are ‘still very interested’ in the Danish international.
They need to find defenders in January as ongoing injury problems for Sven Botman and a recent issue for Dan Burn have left Eddie Howe’s side short.
The problem here is that Barcelona and the player are both completely uninterested in potential exit from Camp Nou, with manager Xavi considering him ‘one of the most reliable’ centre-backs in his squad.
While it is true that the Dane needs to be rotated alongside everyone else, he remains a key part of the squad and their plans moving forwards and so there’s no intention to sell at this point.
Of course, Newcastle could always make them consider that with a big offer, particularly as it would offer Barcelona a huge profit on a player who arrived on a free from Chelsea, but at the moment there is no intention to sell.
