Johan Lager could be on the verge on a move to Newcastle United, presumably working with the club’s women’s team given that’s where his experience lies.
Earlier this week it was confirmed Lager will be leaving Hammarby in Sweden, but at the time it was unclear what his next step would be.
FotbollDirekt cover the situation and report Newcastle United are showing interest in the sports director. It’s not made explicitly clear he’d be in the women’s section of the Magpies. Although that would obviously be the assumption, he could be a general club-strengthening acquisition.
Lager has been with Hammarby for 15 years, explains the report, with seven of those spent as sports director. He’s had success, which has inevitably got him interest from elsewhere.
FotbollDirekt quote him as saying: “My ambition is not to go around and be idle for a long time, so I will probably jump on a job pretty soon. That’s what I think. Right now I’m open to suggestions and I have no restrictions, because my children are big so it’s a new situation for me.”
Newcastle United are said to have already been in contact over a move to England. FotbollDirekt say they’ve been unable to find out how Lager would react to a Magpies approach. That claim feels unlikely given they’ve actually spoken to him this week and have a direct contact.
It’s also difficult to believe because they’ve likely got the lead for the whole story from someone connected to Lager’s camp.
