Newcastle United are continuing their efforts to ‘try to unblock’ striker Goncalo Ramos, with Benfica refusing to move from their asking price.
That’s according to O Jogo and Record‘, who both cover the situation around the forward today and Newcastle’s efforts to do a deal.
Ramos has been linked with a move to St James Park this week, with several reports over the last two days from Portugal putting them at the front of the queue for his signature.
O Jogo follow that up today, stating that Newcastle are continuing their efforts to ‘unblock the transfer’, knowing the ‘uncompromising’ position Benfica have taken up.
The Portuguese side want €40m for the 21-year-old, who is a starter under Roger Schmidt and a player they don’t want to lose this summer.
The newspaper’s belief is that next week may prove to be ‘decisive’ in the process, with talks very much underway between the parties involved.
Record go a little more in-depth than their counterparts, explaining that Benfica have received a proposal for Ramos that may reach €40m eventually.
They say ‘an English team’ is willing to pay €30m for the Portugal Under 21 international, with €10m more in variables included. They don’t, though, specifically, name Newcastle as that team.
They do say that the Magpies have the player ‘under surveillance’ but insist it is not them who have made that initial proposal. Instead, they state that Newcastle ‘will present a proposal’ of €30m at some point.
That won’t be enough as Benfica won’t release him for less than €40m, so Eddie Howe and co need to up their efforts if Ramos is to end up in the North East.
