West Ham United were willing to triple Matheus Nunes’ wages to sign him from Sporting Club de Portugal this summer.

That’s according to Record, who detail the efforts made by the Hammers after David Moyes confirmed the midfielder had rejected them yesterday.

West Ham’s efforts to sign the highly-rated Nunes have emerged this week, with them making a bid to Sporting and the player as they look to bolster Moyes’ squad.

They ultimately fell by the wayside, with the West Ham boss revealing in his press conference yesterday that the player had rejected the move.

Record detail their efforts today, explaining that the Hammers ‘sent an emissary’ to Braga last Sunday to make a final effort for the player.

The newspaper explains that they were willing to offer Nunes an annual salary of €1.2m a year, three times what he currently earns at Alvalade.

They were also willing to pay Sporting to get their man, although the offer presented was ‘far from the €50m’ that the Portuguese side have requested.

That made little difference anyway as the proposal was rejected by Nunes, who was ‘not impressed’ by the numbers.

His priority is to ‘embrace a competitive project’ and he is yet to receive an offer, on a sporting level, that matches his ambitions.

That includes West Ham, who will have to look elsewhere for their new midfield addition.
