Playing the full 90 minutes against Everton for Newcastle United, as well as captaining the team, Fabian Schär remains an important piece of Eddie Howe’s plans this season.
The Switzerland international was called up to his national team despite having a bit of a niggle to his adductors, and had been training apart from the main squad over the past few days to see if he could represent his country against England and Kosovo over the coming week.
However, it appear the Newcastle star didn’t quite progress as expected, because 20 Minutes in Switzerland are reporting the player ‘will not participate in the March friendlies’.
Struggling with his injury, he ‘left the national team on Thursday’ despite ‘training apart from the group’ since ‘the beginning of the week’.
Whether that’s a blow or a relief to Newcastle remains to be seen, because it could mean extra time for their defender to recover and be ready for the next game against Tottenham, or Schär might have aggravated his injury and could be out for longer.
We’ll keep an eye out for any update going forward, but the bottom line is, he’s not going to play for Switzerland and will likely return to Newcastle to continue his treatment.
