As the race for the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez goes on, Newcastle United continues to be named as one of the potential destinations for the 22-year-old.

Today it’s newspaper Record who features a story on the player. Even though the Eagles played last night and they usually only talk about the match in the following morning, there’s now some interesting news that deserved to be shared as soon as possible.

According to the outlet, Nunez’s agent is currently in Madrid, where he’s speaking to Atlético Madrid, where the Colchoneros are looking for the conditions to sign the player from the Lisbon side.

However, the La Liga club are just one of the many clubs who are interested in the Uruguayan star, as Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Newcastle United ‘are in the running’ as well.

Record doesn’t mention how much Benfica are demanding for Nunez’s sale now, although it’s made clear that the Eagles don’t want to lose the player in the January window.

It’s already been claimed in Portugal that in case of a transfer in the winter market, then the Lisbon side would require the payment of his release clause, which stands at €150m.

That’s a lot of money, even for the newly rich Magpies, so if Newcastle do want to sign him, they might have to wait until next summer to bring the striker to St James’ Park.
