For the past few months, it seems like we’re having a little deja-vu in many times we get to read the Portuguese newspapers.
As Benfica star Darwin Nunez can’t stop scoring goals, the list of clubs who want him gets longer, and the Eagles raise the price tag for a summer sale.
Newcastle United, who reportedly made a bid for the signing in January, continue to be named as one of the main contenders to land him, and it’s no different today.
Newspaper Correio da Manhã features a story claiming Benfica president Rui Costa now wants the striker to beat the record sale of João Félix, meaning he’d have to move for over €120m.
It’s recalled that ‘proposals that emerged at the beginning of the year did not exceed 60 million euros’, with West Ham and Newcastle named, but the player would now cost at least twice times that.
Darwin Nunez now has 33 goals scored this season, and the list of victims includes the likes of Sporting, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Liverpool.
For Newcastle to win this race, however, they must not just offer what Benfica want, but also have convincing arguments to attract the player and beat the huge competition, which includes the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United.
