With Newcastle United wanting to improve their squad in the coming months, one of the names that has been mentioned on a recurring basis in the European media is that of Axel Witsel.
The Belgian is currently at Borussia Dortmund, and with his contract running down at the end of the season, he represents a solid yet cheap option to bolster Eddie Howe’s squad.
The appeal here, at least on paper, would be for the 32-year-old, who is comfortably heading towards the back end of his career, to get one final pay off all the while staying at the top level.
Tuttosport cover the situation on Friday because Juventus are also said to be looking at the midfielder, with it stated ‘the Witsel option does not go away’.
They point out ‘the agreement will probably not be renewed’ between Dortmund and the Belgium international, which is why Juventus and Newcastle have ‘put out feelers’, as well as ‘other teams, not only in the Premier League’.
We’ll have to wait and see what comes of all this, but it seems that the Magpies really are after Witsel, which makes a whole lot of sense, bringing in experience and talent all in one go at a low price, at least transfer fee wise.
