Newcastle United are interested in Hellas Verona defender Koray Günter but will face competition from Sevilla for his signature.
That’s according to Estadio Deportivo, who name the Magpies as potential rivals for Sevilla in the race for the 25-year-old.
According to the website, Sevilla chief Monchi is planning for the summer transfer window with an overhaul of the squad needed.
At the top of his list of priorities is finding a replacement for midfielder Éver Banega but they will also need to ‘reinforce’ their defence after selling Daniel Carriço and letting Alejandro Pozo leave on loan in January.
Work to solve that has already begun, and Günter is the man they want to sign. He is currently starring at Hellas Verona, who he joined on loan from Genoa, and Estadio describe him as one of the ‘great revelations’ of Serie A.
His performances have attracted the interest of several clubs and, it seems, Newcastle are among them.
They have been following him for some time and, according to their sources, have watched ‘several’ games live to get a closer look at him.
They would be willing to make an offer of €10m for his services, although Estadio Deportivo insist this comes from ‘the Italian press’ but fails to name who that may be.
Should they make such a move, it seems they will have work to do in order to convince Günter that a move to Newcastle would be better than La Liga.
It’s explained that Sevilla are ‘one of the most convincing players’ for the defender as he prefers La Liga and has a ‘special weakness’ for Andalusia, where he has a house in Marbella.
