Where did it all go wrong for Aleksandar Mitrovic?
The Serbian striker, whom Rafa Benitez pointed out as being ill-fitted for his ‘counter-attack’ tactics at Newcastle, is now being replaced by Islam Slimani, a player with similar attributes.
This means the 23-year-old is now trying to find himself a new club, and while Anderlecht allegedly said no before the transfer window, a return to his former club is seemingly very much on the cards.
We’ve already covered the stories coming out of Belgium regarding that particular transfer, but Sud Ouest in France explain on Wednesday that he also had the chance to go to Bordeaux, who have been interested all window.
The Ligue 1 side came close to an agreement with Newcastle, who became more open towards a loan deal rather than the €12m transfer they originally wanted, but a move to Belgium, a league he knows well, was Mitrovic’s preference.
We’ll have to see how it works out for him, if the deal goes through, but he’ll definitely get more minutes there than at St James’ Park.
