Newcastle United will have to work to convince defender Matthias Ginter of a move in January, with him preferring to decide his future in the spring.
That’s according to SportBILD, who say the centre-back is yet to decide what to do about his expiring contract.
He’s set to be a free agent in the summer and, until he signs a new deal with Borussia Monchengladbach, is free to talk to clubs about a free transfer next summer from January.
That’s alerted several clubs to his availability, including Newcastle, who are reportedly keen to make their move as they look to spend their new-found wealth in January.
Improving the defence is a key target for manager Eddie Howe, and a recent report from Italy stated that they have ‘launched a real offensive’ to secure Ginter’s signature in January.
It seems they will have to put forward a convincing offer, though, with SportBILD stating that the player wants to take his time before deciding his future.
Gladbach want him to extend his deal, but he’s taking his time and ‘wants to decide in the spring’ about what he will do next.
That would suggest he’s not thinking about a move away from the German club in January, and Newcastle might have to do some convincing to change that stance.
Fortunately for them, they now have a chequebook that is big and deep enough to convince anyone, so it might be time to open that up and start writing down some numbers.
