Newcastle United are one of the options for Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy in the next window, according to L’Equipe.
The left-back has put his injury woes behind him, after struggling last year. He’s featured regularly under Carlo Ancelotti and has also regained his best form in recent months. This has caught the attention of several clubs, including Newcastle.
In fact, the report states the Magpies’ interest isn’t new and has been more serious than some others for a while.
It’s claimed Eddie Howe’s side have ‘already started talking numbers’ over a potential deal in the next window. The newspaper don’t mention if Newcastle made contact with Los Blancos or the player’s camp, with the latter being likelier.
A move to St James’ Park isn’t a priority for the France international, given he wants Champions League football.
The Premier League side are sixth in the table and trailing fourth placed Aston Villa by 16 points, with the latter playing two more games. If Newcastle are keen on signing the 28-year-old in the summer, they will have to find another way to convince him.
