Newcastle join West Ham in race to sign 26-year-old – ‘Impossible’ for club to keep him in summer

While West Ham United have been linked with a move for Albert Gudmundsson for a while now, Newcastle United haven’t.

The Magpies certainly know Italy well, having done some shopping there as recently as last summer, when they bought Sandro Tonali from AC Milan.

It’s now hinted they could return there in the next transfer window by Gazzetta dello Sport, who name them as an interested party in the Genoa star alongside West Ham.

The outlet have an article on their website recalling the Serie A side turned down €24m from Fiorentina for the Iceland international in January, having already balanced their books with the sale of Radu Dragusin.

Not wanting to weaken themselves further, they kept hold of their other in-form player, but it’s now made clear that if he continues excelling in the coming months, keeping him will be ‘impossible’.

He is ‘in the sights’ of the likes of Newcastle and West Ham, with the latter already making contact in January for the 26-year-old.

Not only that, but the duo have, alongside Tottenham, ‘sent their observers’ to watch the player more closely, with each and one of them having the money to close a deal next summer.

It doesn’t help Genoa that their owners 777 Partners need to close both this and next budget with a profit or some sort of parity between income and expenditure, meaning the allure of Premier League money could mean an easy deal as long as their asking price (believed to be around €30m) is met.
