A summer Birmingham City target, and one who very nearly made the move to the Championship club, has found himself involved in the latest Aleksandr Mitrovic rumour.

On Tuesday, Calciomercato put forward the idea that Torino, who are looking for a striker capable of helping out Andrea Belotti, were interested in Newcastle United’s Mitrovic.

The Serbia international hasn’t featured as much as he’d like in Rafa Benitez’s plans this season, with the Spaniard explaining he didn’t fit the counter-attacking style of football he’s trying to use in the Premier League, and a move away in January to get game time ahead of the World Cup appears to be needed.

The interest from Serie A was just Torino ‘thinking’ about a move for the 23-year-old, but Tuttosport on Thursday take it one step further by explaining Newcastle’s interest in one of the Italian club’s players could help smooth things over nicely.

Back in August, Birmingham City tried to get Afriyie Acquah, but their offer didn’t quite do enough to cut it, and the midfielder stayed.

Well, the aforementioned Italian newspaper explain that Newcastle have now taken an active interest in his situation, which could help Torino get their desired target in the process.

Of course, with Mitrovic costing a lot more than Acquah (or at least a lot more than Birmingham City offered), any deal for the striker including the Ghanaian midfielder would need to have money on top of it, but it’s certainly something Tuttosport see as possible.

Sport Witness recently learnt neither the midfielder or his entourage are yet to be made aware of Torino’s plans to potentially sell him, suggesting there might not be much in this yet.

Either that or they’re keeping everything very quiet.
