Having let Danny Rose return to Tottenham once his loan spell came to an end, Newcastle United are still in need of a left-back.
It looked like they’d found their man in Jetro Willems, but an untimely serious injury brought his season to an early end, and he wasn’t kept around once his initial deal expired in June.
That means Steve Bruce and his staff need to find a starter for the left hand side of their defence, and they appear to be turning to Italy, and more specifically to Naples.
We already covered an article on Tuesday claiming Newcastle could return for Faouzi Ghoulam after their attempts in January.
The Algeria international turned down the opportunity to move to St James’ Park on loan midway through the season, wanting to fight for a spot under Gennaro Gattuso, but that didn’t happen.
That stance appears to have changed this summer, and Corriere dello Sport on Wednesday state ‘fans’ of the player are ‘chasing’ the defender, with Newcastle ‘at the front’.
This suggests Bruce and co. are leading the pack for Ghoulam, and it’s now up to them to make the right offer.
